A
bit of my history: Born in the
wilds of Northern Kentucky, I was given my first guitar by an uncle
whom I believe meant me no particular harm. I grew up on a mix of
John Denver, gospel, and the Doobie Brothers. High school choir
and marching band left their own unique chisel marks on the mold
of my musical character. I studied voice and music education at
Morehead State University, where I received my undergraduate degree.
That led to a 15-year stint of shaping the future in public schools,
during which time I went back to school and earned a Masters in
Music Education from the University of Kentucky.
About
my bands: The bands through the years are difficult
to count since my first band began when I was 15. The groups included
the usual variety dance bands (I've played lots of receptions and
bar mitzvahs), White Johnny and the Spine Poodles (sort of Prog-punk),
East 60 (country), and Fuego Latino (Latin explosion), and instructing
the Bluegrass A Capella Underground Project (BAC-UP). Currently
I'm performing with Whisper
Garden (Darkly Literary Blues with lots of original music),
Caribbean Blues, Great
Heart, Trouble, and The Sensations (variety dance). My influences
are mostly storytellers like John Hiatt and Jimmy Buffett, and I
still love performing whatever music the audience wants to hear.
Present
day: Now my focus
lies in songwriting and continuing to
shape the future of aspiring musicians,
no matter their age or desire. My friends
have called me a born teacher, mostly
as praise, but occasionally in eye-rolling
jest when I'm delivering the lecture that
is my knee jerk response to someone who
claims they can't sing. If you have a
voice and want to sing, you can sing.
You might not be the next American Idol,
but the joy of making music is a gift
above winning any contest.
Feel free to contact me with
questions about my songs, bands, or instruction
available in acoustic, electric, or bass guitar, and of course for
voice lessons.
